Changes to Health Coverage in 2026
The health insurance landscape for immigrants changed significantly on January 1, 2026, due to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Many individuals who were previously eligible for subsidized "Obamacare" plans no longer qualify.
Who was affected?
- DACA Recipients: Most DACA holders lost federal subsidy eligibility.
- TPS Holders: Subsidies were removed for many Temporary Protected Status holders.
- Green Card Holders < 5 years: A new "coverage gap" affects LPRs with income below the poverty line.
Common Alternatives
If you have lost your ACA subsidy, you may still have options:
- FQHCs: Community health centers provide primary care on a sliding fee scale regardless of status.
- Emergency Medicaid: Covers acute, life-threatening situations and labor/delivery.
- State-Specific Plans: States like California (Medi-Cal) and New York have expanded their own state-funded coverage to include more immigrants.
