Credit Invisible

Welcome! Without an ITIN or credit accounts, you are currently "Credit Invisible" to the major bureaus.

How Credit Building Works for Newcomers

Building credit from scratch is one of the biggest challenges for immigrants in the USA. Most people start as "Credit Invisible," meaning the bureaus have no file for you at all.

The 6-Month Rule

It generally takes 6 months of consistent reporting to a credit bureau before a FICO score can be generated. During this initial period, your focus should be on establishing accounts and making every payment on time.

VantageScore 4.0 vs FICO

While FICO is the most common score used by mortgage lenders, VantageScore 4.0 is increasingly used by landlords and credit card companies. It is often more "immigrant friendly" because it can sometimes generate a score sooner than 6 months if alternative data (like rent) is available.

Accelerating Your Score

  • Secured Credit Cards: These are the "gold standard" for building credit. They report to all 3 bureaus and show you can manage revolving debt.
  • Rent Reporting: Services like RentTrack or Piñata report your on-time rent payments to the bureaus, which can give your score a 20-50 point boost.
  • Utility Payments: Some scoring models now include phone and electric bill history.
